Digital labour

social-blooging-pay_660_061815020041

A question must be asked how did the internet became a source to earn money ? people started to work in the internet as they are in the real life they earned money in different ways . Companies or individuals sometimes just by hanging in the social media you can earn money if you have a certain number of followers maybe you will be a target for a company so you can promote their work or product . There are people working in the internet a full job just like any workers working to develop the place they are working in .

Week 8

Transmedia

images-4

Transmedia is using more than 1 platform to tell a story across time .Transmedia worlds must have a continuity across the different languages and platforms that are used. For example The dark night it was a master piece.
As any other form of storytelling, Transmedia Storytelling presents a narrative world, which requires the suspension of disbelief by the user. This suspension is more effective the more detailed the narrative world is. Details like Sherlock Holmes playing a Stradivarius or snorting a line of cocaine are those giving verisimilitude to the narrative world. Loved that I had the opportunity to try a transmedia project it was a challenge but I enjoyed every part of it.

Week 6

The One-dimensional Network Society of Manuel Castells

images-2
According to Manuel Castells chronical, the three independent processes that were present between 1960’s and 1970’s combine to form a new society. The three processes were an economic crisis, of satism and capitalism , the emergence of the new movements like feminism and environmentalism and information technology revolution. Castell argues that the IT revolution, is to some extent responsible for the fall of the soviet union. The emergence of the new social unions in responded to the crisis of the nation, civil society institutions and democracy in most parts of the world. The three processes have resulted in the new social structure.
The current methods of communication and social science widely support the network approach that is welcomed in the whole world. The approach has everything going with it in in the same direction in large scale expansion in a different type of media networks and social networks. Despite these, it is the main drawback is the formality of its methods and the substantiation of its morphology. Castell also argues that the society disintegrates the social relationships in the society and develops the culture of virtuality. This is therefore a limitation and that the social networks will remain the same because they are contextually embedded. The advancement in technology is leading the society in the direction of the one-dimensional network society. The information age global networks, the prevalence of logic dominance and the penetration in the domination are the only methods that show some differences between the belief and values. Finally, according to Castells, networks, information age, technological advancements and communication has made the society be a machine that cannot be controlled.

Week 7

In Defence of Memes

twitternetwork

This week we talked about the term “meme’ which is an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations. Through the reading we had for this week you can see that memes are not passive and do not follow the model of biological infection. This is how we can describe media as a domino effect .It spreads like a disease world wide by people sharing it and posting again and again .

Week 4

The Rise and fall Electric Telegraph

images-3
Technological advancement has led to the outdating of the electric telegraph as a means of communication. Electric telegraph transmitted signals through wires from the source to the destination that were converted into the message. Claude Chappe invented the non-electric telegraph in 1794. Later, the electric telegraph replaced the optical one. The Crude telegraph was invented in Bavira by Samuel Soemmering. In 1928, Harrison Dyar invented the first telegraph in the USA. In 1825, William Sturgeon, a British inventor, invented electromagnet which formed the foundation of electronic communication. The electromagnetic idea was later use by Joseph Henry (1797-1878) to demonstrate the possibility of distance communication.
Further developments were achieved by Samuel Morse in 1935 when he was a professor at the New York University. He proved that wires were able to transmit signals. He used current pulses to deflect an electromagnet which moved a marker to develop codes written on a piece of paper. With financial empowerment, Samuel Morse and his Associates had access to private funds which helped them to spread their line to Philadelphia and New York. As a result, small telegraph companies were developed and they started their operations in the Midwest, South, and East. Dispatching trains using telegraph began in 1851 and in the same year. Multiplexing was later developed by the Western Union in 1913. This technology could allow transmission of 8 messages, four in each direction simultaneously over a single wire. Later, teleptrinter machines and Varioplex were invented in 1925 and 1936 respectively. Later western union introduced facsimile devices and it inaugurated TELEX in 1959. The inventions by western union therefore lead to the gradual eradication of the electric telegraph.

Creative Writing

It is my strong belief that creative writing or writing for leisure can go a long way in improving academic skills and grades among students if embraced and nurtured well. For many people, creative writing falls outside the normal boundaries of academic, journalistic, professional and technical writing styles that are deemed more appropriate to learn and pursue. Nonetheless, creative writing is a craft like any other as it allows writers to express their thoughts, emotions and feelings through writing. Given that every normal human being has thoughts and emotions, then it means that anyone can be a creative writer if taught how to harness these thoughts and ideas into writing. Therefore, creative writing should be nurtured like any other form of art. The main difference is that creative writing is more applicable in everyday situations. Getting used to expressing feelings ideas and emotions in writing has many benefits for the regular student.
To start with, creative writing improves an individual’s writing skills and vocabulary. By learning how to clearly and successfully describe, express and illustrate ideas and even explain and narrate processes ensures that these skills can be adopted in the formal academic context. Teachers are more likely to be impressed by a student who not only understands concepts but also knows how to express these concepts clearly. There are those students who may have a clear idea of an answer but the process of putting this answer in writing is problematic. In this case, students end up losing marks.
Ideally, writing is not just about sticking to grammar rules. There is a need to make writing interesting and flawless. Ideas and sentences should flow seamlessly in a manner that keeps the reader interested and engaged. To achieve this, individuals have to be keen on their choice of words and practice doing so continuously. As the adage goes, “practice practice makes perfect.” For beginners, there is an article on some of the basic steps learners can follow to improve their writing. This allows a writer to impress the reader and at the same time pass the intended message. There are numerous people who have excelled in creative writing and turned it into a profession.
For instance, JK Rowling, author of the famous Harry Potter book series and George R. R. Martin of the Game of Thrones book series have impressed in creative writing. For those lucky enough to have read of the works of these two writers, or by any other, one can attest that these writers are able to transport their readers into a unique fantasy world of their own making very easily; using through carefully chosen words. However, they did not just wake up one day and became successful writers. They have progressed over time through practice. Regular students have a chance to reach this level through training and practice. Several institutions are already offering creative writing courses as a full course as opposed to being a mere topic in literature.
Additionally, there are organizations that seek to promote creative writing. Some there are such organizations that seek to promote creative writing among the youth and the general population. They hold regular contests on various categories targeting different age groups. Some of the best known are Overland , Wheel centre , which cater to different categories of writing such as poetry, narratives, short stories and journalistic articles. In fact, Overland recently launched the Melbourne Writers Festival that seeks to induce change in society though creative writing.
Similarly, learning institutions have also joined the campaign to promote creative writing in other ways apart from offering related courses. Monash University recently linked with Emerging Writers’ Festival to launch the Monash Undergraduate Prize for Creative  Writing. This is a contest that seeks entries from all over Australia on various writing categories. This year’s event received thousands entries from various participants from all over Australia. A number of entries were shortlisted with winners getting to have their story published in Rebecca Starford’s Killing your Darlings as well as receiving a monetary prize.
It is thus clear that students have a lot to gain in pursuing creative writing. Apart from benefiting from improved writing skills academically that can improve grades, writers can benefit immensely in forms of prizes and cash by participating in writing competitions. Moreover, all individuals can learn the art of creative writing to drive social change.

Creativity in Storytelling

images

Have you heard of storytelling? This art can be found across different cultures. It was majorly practiced traditionally where grandparents would narrate stories about past experiences. This would be passed over from one generation to another. Nowadays, you do not need to listen to your grandparent’s tales. There are new forms of storytelling that include films and other digital forms. Many films would be produced and delivered to the consumers who increase each and every day. Competition has therefore been eminent in this field (Borshukov, George & John 25).
A film called The Matrix, upon its production, attracted a large audience and increased demand. It embodies the real storytelling art that would make one unable to differentiate between illusion and reality. You would enjoy watching this film as it is a good form of entertainment. Different kinds of media receive varying intensities of attention and demand from its audiences. Video games also help one in understanding what the producer means as a form of communication. People may despise various forms of gaming that are connected to the matrix because it might deflect from the perception of real life. If one wants to enjoy it, he or she must understand that it is a kind of transmedia storytelling. The difference that exists between The Matrix and Casablanca is that Casablanca consists of only one movie while The Matrix contains three movies and more. The Matrix Reloaded was another entertaining film that shows the ability to tell a story in a manner that audience can understand. It creates a compelling environment solely for its audience (Borshukov, George & John 30).

David Gauntlett

creativity_fb_post_final

Creativity partly contributes success in life. For scientists and researchers who aim at giving their best in research apply a high degree of creativity. However, David Gauntlett has been a successful researcher thanks to creativity. David has come up with his book “Making is connecting” that shows how people are connected to each other courtesy of various social links. Social links are not left behind by this renowned wave of creativity. The internet has been one of the most used platforms whereby people exchange ideas while they get to learn new ones. Examples of such platforms include; Wikipedia for vast knowledge, Revelry for knitting art, and Kiva, which is majorly known for Microfinance (Borshukov, George & John 10).
David Gauntlett is passionate about how tensions that erupted in the 19th Century impacted on perception between art and craft. This was majorly attributed to various changes in society courtesy of Industrial Revolution. Art was majorly fuelled by the need to gain pleasure from doing something to another person. The culture was also one of the determining factors of championing for art and craft. People are longing for various social relationships that accompany creativity. According to the researcher’s findings, happiness plays a significant role in these social relationships. One can vividly see how creativity is essential in bringing joy to humanity. Can you imagine the world without happiness? It would be a hell-like world. Nevertheless, shortcomings might exist as a result of these platforms because of exposing crucial information about oneself to the public. By reading David’s book, one would readily distinguish between digital and analog cultures (Borshukov, George & John 20).
